16 Months Jail For Breaking Rule

A woman driver has been sentenced to 16 months jail after clocking up £280,000 in parking fines.

Magistrates in Graz, Austria, heard that Maria Schaeffer, 38, ignored 700 tickets for overstaying in short term parking bays.

Each £30 ticket snowballed to a £400 fine with extra penalties for non payment and costs.

Judges suspended the jail term on condition she pays the bulk of the fines.

A police spokesman said: "She should have realised that fines don't just disappear over time."

Daily Jokes

@ A bus load of tourists arrives at Runnymede. They gather around the guide who says, "This is the spot where the barons forced King John to sign the Magna Carta."

A fellow at the front of the crowd asks, "When did that happen?"

"1215," answers the guide.

The man looks at his watch and says, "Damn! Just missed it by a half hour!"

@Windsor castle, outside of London, is directly in the flight path of Heathrow International Airport.

While a group of tourist was standing outside the castle admiring the elegant structure, a plane flew overhead at a relatively low altitude making a tremendous amount of noise.

One particularly annoyed tourist whined, "Why did they build the castle so close to the airport?"

@ A pair of tourists were out in the fields when they discovered an abandoned well near an old farm house.

Of course they're curious so they drop a small stone into the well, but they never hear it hit bottom.

They search and find a larger rock and drop it into the well but once again hear nothing.

They decide they need something larger and search the farm yard for a larger object.

After much struggle, they manage to drag a large railroad tie to the edge of the well and drop it over the edge.

After several seconds, a goat tears across the yard and without any hesitation, dives head first into the open hole.

The two tourists stand in amazement.

About then a farmer appears and tells them he is looking for a lost goat.

The tourists tell the farmer about the goat diving into the well.

"That couldn't be my goat", the farmer replies, "My goat was grazing in the field roped to a railroad tie!"

Healthy LIfe

Dr. Saw Huat Seong, Senior Consultant Cardio thoracic surgeon at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore, believes that lifestyle is a major factor in determining whether someone contracts heart disease. “I am a big proponent of lifestyle modifications. There are various risk factors to consider when talking about heart disease. Most people suffer from lack of exercise. Rich people are driven to their offices, they are driven everywhere, and there is no tradition of exercise.

“One thing most people are averse to is morning exercise routines. I don't know why, but most of you do not want to get up early in the morning and exert yourselves. One thing that is advantageous about morning exercise is that the ground is cool early in the morning. In the evening, all of the heat that the earth has accumulated from the sun is radiated to the atmosphere, and this has the effect of wear out those who exercise during that time. Another advantage is, in the early morning, we have some time to ourselves, while later we become busy, which in turn gives us excuses to evade exercise,” he said.

Diet is also very important, according to Dr. Seong. “Most people in south Asia take three big meals a day, which is unhealthy. There is a theory, and I think it is a good theory, that says that people should eat in smaller quantities throughout the day. This is particularly effective in combating diabetes.”

Dr. Timothy Lee, a Consultant Neurosurgeon at Gleneagles Hospital in Singapore will deliver his lecture on neck and lower back pains. “Neck and lower back pains are largely degenerative phenomena that get worse with age. 95 percent of patients do not need surgery, and for them the main objective should be to manage the pain by taking certain preventive measures.

“A common misconception is that the pain will be helped if you turn your head from side to side and make the cracking sound that is made when we crack our knuckles. While this may provide short term relief, it is harmful in the long run. These pains happen because of bones grinding against each other, therefore turning your head from side to side will eventually be harmful,” Lee said.

“Hyper extending the neck, like we do when looking upwards is harmful as it places stress on the neck. A possible way to lessen the effect of degeneration is to do exercises that build up muscles in the neck to provide support,” he added and went on to demonstrate the exercise which involves placing a hand on each of the four sides of the head (front, back, left, right) and pushing against it, without changing head position.

“Also, the position in which we sleep is important as we spend about six to eight hours a day in that position. The best sleeping position in this regard is to sleep on your back as that is the natural position. A crucial thing to remember is that there has to be cushioning under the neck, so as to avoid stress. Often, people sleep with just their heads on the pillow without support for the neck. The same applies to the lower back. Some think that it will help back pain if they sleep on a hard surface. That is wrong because our backs are naturally curved, and to avoid stress we must sleep on a mattress that supports our backs,” he said.

Some forms of exercise are harmful to the lower back. “Sit-ups, and any form of exercise that involves bending forward places stress on the lower back and aggravates back pain. Bending backwards builds muscles which support the region, and that is helpful in the long run.”

The importances of our lifestyles come through in both the doctors' words. Health is an often undervalued part of our lives, but it is up to us to ensure through proper lifestyle choices that we do not suffer too much in our old age.

Incredible Baby - 24 Fingers and Toes

A boy was born with 24 fingers and toes in California hospital. The six digits on each of Kamani Hubbard's hands and feet are perfectly formed and fully functioning.

The baby looked so normal that maternity staff at St Luke's Hospital in San Francisco didn't even notice the discrepancy after he was born three weeks ago.

Miryoki Gross, the baby's mother, said that, after she gave birth, doctors and nurses simply told her the baby weighed six pounds and was in good health.

The extra digits - including five fingers and a thumb on each hand - were eventually spotted by the baby's father, Kris Hubbard, a postal worker.

He said his family had a history of polydactylism and he himself had the non-functioning nubs of sixth fingers removed as a child.

"I was in amazement. It took a little time for me to take it all in," he said. "My son has six fingers, then I saw toes and I thought 'This is quite unique'. Some family members have had six fingers, not completely developed. But not the toes."

The parents have made no decision on whether to remove Kamani's extra digits but doctors say there is no need and, rather, they may be useful to keep .

"It's merely an interesting and beautiful variation rather than a worrisome thing. I would be tempted to leave those fingers in place," said Dr Michael Treece, a paediatrician at St Luke's.

"I realise children would tease each other over the slightest things, and having extra digits on each hand is more than slight. But imagine what sort of pianist a 12-fingered person would be. Imagine what sort of a flamenco guitarist. If nothing else, think of their typing skills."

Environment Friendly Coffin

An Australian company has launched a personalised range of environmentally friendly coffins to make the final goodbye a little more individual.

Directors of the company said,"People are becoming increasingly aware of the impact they have on the environment and the availability of a Fair Trade funeral enables people to uphold their values through from life into death."

LifeArt offers customised designs such as an image of a surfer catching a wave, a picturesque scene or the colours of a favourite sports team.

Customers can design their own coffin or choose from a range of designs, such as a woodland glade, an open road, Sydney Harbour Bridge or a cowboy riding off into the sunset.

LifeArt coffins are manufactured from enviroboard, a form of cardboard, which meets the standards required by the funeral industry for either cremation or burial.

The company says it means their clients can "pass away safe in the knowledge that your container (and its treasured contents) can biodegrade quickly and harmlessly with less carbon emissions and without cost to timber forests".

Jokes of The Day

While the pope was visiting the USA, he told the driver of his limo that he has the sudden urge to drive. The driver was a good Catholic man, and would not ever dream of questioning the pope's authority. So the pope sat at the wheel, while his driver got in the back.

They were traveling down the road doing between 70 and 80 mph, when a policeman happened to see them. As he pulled them over, he called in to headquarters reporting a speeding limo, with a VIP inside it.

The chief asked: "Who is in the limo, the mayor?"

The policeman told him: "No, someone more important than the mayor."

Then the chief asked "Is it the governor?"

The policeman answered: "No, someone more important than the governor."

The chief finally asked: "Is it the President?"

The policeman answered: "No, someone even more important than the President."

This made the chief very angry and he bellowed: "Now who is more important than the President?!"

The policeman calmly wispered: "I'll put it to you this way chief. I don't know who is this guy, but he has the pope as his chauffeur."

A police officer pulls over this guy who had been weaving in and out of the lanes. He goes up to the guy's window and says "Sir, I need you to blow into this breathalyzer tube."

The man says, "Sorry officer I can't do that. I am an asthmatic. If I do that I'll have a really bad asthma attack."

"Okay, fine. I need you to come down to the station to give a blood sample."

"I can't do that either. I am a hemophiliac. If I do that, I'll bleed to death."

"Well, then we need a urine sample."

"I'm sorry officer I can't do that either. I am also a diabetic. If I do that I'll get really low blood sugar."

"Alright then I need you to come out here and walk this white line."

"I can't do that, officer."

"Why not?"

"Because I'm too drunk to do that."

Blasting Thunder

How many people do you know, that literally jump out of their skins at the "clap" of thunder? Is it the sudden noise, or the volume of sound? Or the idea of the storm that follows?

Thunder is one of nature's loudest and most nerve-shattering noises. It occurs following lightning, which may or may not be seen as a flash of light, or a bolt. The air around the lightning is superheated to approximately five times that of the Sun, causing it to expand faster than the speed of sound, then compressing the air to make the boom that you hear.

At times, you see lightning without thunder. Or see something often referred to as "heat lightning". Both of these phenomenon are due to your distance from the actual weather disturbance. And considering that at any given moment, there are about 2,000 storms taking place around the world, chances are pretty good of observing or hearing one, without the other.

The cause of thunder has been the subject of centuries of speculation and scientific inquiry. The first recorded theory is attributed to the Greek philosopher Aristotle in the third century BC, and an early speculation was that it was caused by the collision of clouds. Subsequently, numerous other theories have been proposed. By the mid-19th century, the accepted theory was that lightning produced a vacuum. In the 20th century a consensus evolved that thunder must begin with a shock wave in the air due to the sudden thermal expansion of the plasma in the lightning channel. In a fraction of a second the air is heated to a temperature approaching 28,000 °C (50,000 °F). This heating causes it to expand outward, plowing into the surrounding cooler air at a speed faster than sound would travel in that cooler air. The outward-moving pulse that results is a shock wave, similar in principle to the shock wave formed by an explosion, or at the front of a supersonic aircraft.

More recently, this consensus has been eroded by the observation that measured overpressures in simulated lightning are greater than what could be achieved by the amount of heating found. Alternative proposals rely on electrodynamic effects of the massive current acting on the plasma in the bolt of lightning.

In a strange quirk of Nature, the town Tororo,Uganda suffered an average 251 days of thunder a year, from 1967-1976, the highest incidence ever recorded.

Fattest Teenager Of The World

Georgia Davis weighs 210 kg at just 15 years of age, which makes her the world's fattest teenager.

Georgia began over-eating when she was five years old and her father had just died. She kept on stuffing her face and today she can't take more than 2 steps without having to stop and catch her breath. She can't sleep in a normal bed because, well she simply can't get in or out of it and she recently got banned from the school cafeteria for the simple reason that she just ate too much.

"It's like a drug. Some people choose heroin but I've chosen food and it's killing me. Doctors have told me I could drop dead at any moment." says Georgia Davis. To prevent this the 15-year-old will have to take a trip to the US and join a fat-camp and attempt to loose over 100 kg in six months.

Georgia's daily diet includes 2 loafs of bread, an entire chocolate cake, 2 plates of chips, 7 sandwiches, a gallon of soda, lasagna and many more. Her calorie intake is 14,000 calories a day while a normal 15 year-old takes in 2000 calories.

The doctor said,"Although food is like a drug for Georgia I think it's the parent's fault. They should stop feeding their daughter or she won't last much longer".Because of the excessive weight her hearth can stop at any moment. A few months ago she developed 2 kind of diabetes.

Survival is The Fittest

Thousands of competitors walked on hot coals, swam through underwater tunnels and braved electric fences in what's billed as the world's ultimate endurance test.

The Tough Guy 2009 challenge is described by its organisers as a 'uniquely fear-ridden' test of both body and spirit, reports the Daily Mail.

Competitors from 25 countries descended on South Perton Farm, near Wolverhampton, for the brutal survival race.

They were strongly advised to prepare by undergoing cold water training to guard against the potentially lethal threat of hypothermia.

The freezing cold challengers began the race with a gruelling six-mile cross-country run and were then challenged by 21 different obstacles including tunnels and swamps to complete the course.

The event's website warns: "The event is uniquely fear ridden and you need to be fit in both body and spirit to survive the ordeal."

The hardy challengers risk cuts, burns, broken bones and possibly worse as they make their way across the 150-acre site.

Competitors must sign a 'Death Warrant disclaimer' before taking part in the event which claims to be the 'safest most dangerous taste of mental physical pain and endurance on earth'.

Zebra Crossing For Only Lovers

A zebra crossing is a type of pedestrian crossing used in many places around the world. The crossing is characterised by longitudinal stripes (hence the term, named after the zebra) on the road, parallel to the flow of the traffic, alternately a light colour and a dark one.

A Chinese city has created a pedestrian crossing with a romantic theme to help put couples in the mood for love.

Traffic officials in Chengdu came up with the idea for the crossing which features two hearts and the message in English: "I love you", reports the Tianfu Morning Post.

A spokesman said the local traffic bureau wanted to give the crossing a romantic atmosphere because it was close to the Hejiang Pavilion, a popular dating venue for young couples.

"We want to make everybody who walks on it feel warmth and love from others," said the spokesman, adding that it was believed to be the first crossing of its kind in the whole country.

"We have two wishes - one, that all who walk on it experience long-lasting love and, two, that they obey traffic rules and cross safely."

Tourist Liang Xuemei, from Hainan, asked her friend to pull over and take pictures after spotting the crossing during a tour of the city: "It looks very welcoming," she said.

Doctor & His Patients

A doctor and his wife were having a big argument at breakfast.

"You aren't so good in bed either!" he shouted and stormed off to work.

By midmorning, he decided he'd better make amends and phoned home. After many rings, his wife picked up the phone.

"What took you so long to answer?"

"I was in bed."

"What were you doing in bed this late?"

"Getting a second opinion."

A man goes to his doctor for a complete checkup.

He hasn't been feeling well and wants to find out if he's ill.

After the checkup the doctor comes out with the results of the examination.

"I'm afraid I have some bad news. You're dying and you don't have much time," the doctor says.

"Oh no, that's terrible. How long have I got?" the man asks.

"10..." says the doctor.

"10? 10 what? Months? Weeks? What?!" he asks desperately.

"10...9...8...7..."

A young woman went to her doctor complaining of pain.

"Where are you hurting?" asked the doctor.

"You have to help me, I hurt all over", said the woman.

"What do you mean, all over?" asked the doctor, "be a little more specific."

The woman touched her right knee with her index finger and yelled, "Ow, that hurts."

Then she touched her left cheek and again yelled, "Ouch! That hurts, too."

Then she touched her right earlobe, "Ow, even THAT hurts", she cried.

The doctor checked her thoughtfully for a moment and told her his diagnosis, "You have a broken finger."

Fiction - THis Forest is Mine

It is that time of the evening in the jungle when the lion, the leopard even the langoor are in close proximity of each other. Jungle birds in their exotic plumage swoop down from their high perch to observe the ritual of coming together. It is almost as if the entire forest population is heading to a ceremony… soon the great golden sun will sink to rest in the western horizon… and the Serengeti will take on a sullen silence.

This is the moment when the hunter and the hunted-- congregate in an exodus to the one place where all of them-- the predator and the prey come together in a primordial ritual. Nowhere is the phenomenon of the forest family more evident than here. It is the one common denominator which prompts a natural truce to come into play…in an unforgiving habitat where only the fittest survive…for this is the source of all life…a gift left behind by the torrential rains that came and swept the dry parched savanna …bathing the dry forest with its bounty…leaving its wet footprint in the shape of large pools of water…in order that the wondrous miracle of life…on the Serengeti…the savanna and the forest reinvigorates itself- only to burst into a kaleidoscope of colors and the sight and sounds of this formidable yet fragile system- that the animal kingdom call home.

The lordly lion leading his pride takes to the water…under the watchful eye of a leopard sitting in a tree…waiting his turn. Somewhere in the distance a thumping sound rents the air…as an army of apes rhythmically announce their arrival by thumping their chests for the happy hour. Rising above the chatter of monkeys the myriad fauna come shrieking thru the trees to take up a pecking order. A spotted deer nervously observes the unfolding circus in front of it…tentatively bends its neck to drink from the pond and sees the cheetah reflected in the shimmering water from its perch and intuitively darts away into the safety of the forest.

A gaggle of geese serenely glide across the pond. Suddenly the shriek of monkeys noisily announces the arrival of its cousins, the chimpanzees-- larger defiant and self assured-- they make their way through the trees in familial groups. The oldest in a graying black coat leads the way- his demeanor as a family elder separates him from the rest. The females jealously guard their off springs…and bringing up the rear -a grunting gang of male stalwarts. Amongst them a frisky little chimp who ventures out towards the thick foliage of the forest away from the safety of his mother's embrace…his curiosity taking him further and deeper in to the trees. Overhead the parakeets scream at the young intruder as he now having lost his bearings finds himself alone in the bewildering thicket of trees and shrubs.

He hears a sharp sound as if someone heavy has stepped on a dry twig…and then pandemonium…shrieks and screams shatter the air- as birds take to wing…monkeys come crashing through the trees…followed by the staccato sound of gunfire…Poachers! These are the true predators of nature's delicately balanced habitats. He had heard of them- his grandfather would tell of this cruel breed that would descend on the forest with their fire breathing weapons that spit death and destruction. No one in the forest is safe from them. Not the mighty elephant-- it was his tusks they killed him for- not the mighty tiger- they hunted him for his golden skin and his viscera- to rob him of his power- they hunted his fellow chimps for experiments in faraway places. Those they couldn't use were taken alive to be put into cages in distant lands.

Amid the chaos and the stampede of all who had gathered near the watering hole he hears a loud familiar grunt as a pair of powerful arms sweeps him away into the trees. It is his grandfather…bleeding from the mouth and yet gathering his grandson in his powerful grip he swings from tree to tree…leaving the sound of gunfire in the distance. But his grip suddenly weakens as blood oozes out of his mouth and then with a heart rending groan he comes down crashing through the branches on to the ground. The others find him there the next morning with his mighty arms around his young grandson- his body acting like a shield to protect the trembling frame of the little one. In life the grand old chieftain may have been a story teller but in death he would be remembered as a valiant warrior.

That evening as evening shadows start to lengthen over the forest- they gather in silence and stealthily go towards the watering hole. There the sight that greets them is one of mayhem - slaughter and unspeakable cruelty. The skinned torso of the stately lioness…the giant carcass of a once noble elephant- its tusks gouged out…a hyena dragging away the skinless torso of a cheetah and countless dead corpses among them the young chimp recognizes the outstretched arms of his mother she has been shot in the stomach. His father a giant specimen of his breed has taken a hail of bullets in his body- his one arm still cradling his mother's body.

Raja- the lion king surveys the ground littered with bodies and orders as only he can:

“When the sun rises tomorrow, no trace of death or destruction must be seen on this hallowed ground. Take your loved ones- take everyone away from this well of life. Let this watering hole be a sacred place. We will always come to this sacred spot as we have and before us our forefathers have… as will our children…and the children of their children…to pay homage to the ones who have gone from us this day. Remember them with every drop of water you drink from this pond. Let this be remembered-- let this be done.”

The gathered inhabitants of the forest bow their heads in obedience. On a mound not far away-- a grey wolf lets off a mournful howl…as if to say: “We will endure and we will survive.”

The pregnant silence is broken by a desolate cry of anguish that comes from the young surviving chimp- now an orphan. His friend's mother quickly moves to hold his body wracked with sobs.

Raja- the lion king casts his royal gaze upon the young thing and asks:

“Who cries in my forest?”

“It is the young orphan, my lord.” The mother of his friend cries out.

“Let him speak for himself …” thunders the lion king. “Speak…young one why do you weep so?”

Still sobbing the young chimp stands up and says:

“My lord- I am left alone…they have taken everything away from me!” His voice trails.

“Know this - you are not alone- look around you all that stand around you including the trees and I- are your family now. You are not alone. We will not allow that.

“Yes my lord.”

“Good. Remind me then, why it is that you are not alone- eh?”

“Because-my lord- everyone in this forest is my friend.”

“True! And what of the forest itself?” asks Raja

“My lord- this forest is mine!”

“Indeed it is. Let it be said- let it be remembered.”

The gentle voice of an elderly mother of five narrating this story to the dozen or so children huddled in a basement of a bombed out building in Gaza is drowned out by the now all too familiar shriek of an Israeli bombing raid over the city… instinctively the woman in a futile but brave gesture tries to shield the children with her own body before the impact. The terrified children cringe and cling to her. The bombs hit with ferocious impact…bringing the remnants of steel and concrete structure atop them. The shrapnel from the bombs the molten steel and shards of glass pierce thru the air and settle into the bodies of the little children killing most of them and maiming all of them. The woman has taken most of the impact on her frail body. The next morning as the medical teams and First Aid volunteers feverishly dig into the rubble following the heartrending screams of the surviving children they manage to reach the survivors. Only three children are still alive but barely.

A weeping medical team worker holds one of the children-- a five year old soaked in blood with a shattered arm who stares blankly at him. Holding the frail trembling body of the child, the Medic cries in aguish: “Allah ho Akbar- what do you thing these three will grow up to be?

The child moans in pain and poignantly lifts his small little arm and sobs: “We didn't do anything wrong… we were only listening to a story.”
