90 Years Old Midwife Helps Deliver Great Granddaughter

A 90-year-old former midwife,Maggie Jones helped deliver her own great granddaughter.

When Maggie Jones received a phone call saying her granddaughter had gone into labour, she was happy to provide moral support. She helped deliver Kathy Shah's baby Carys on the living room floor.

Mrs Jones worked as a midwife in the Second World War and had not delivered a baby for 50 years. She said: "I thought to myself, 'Maggie, it's time to wash your hands and don your overalls', and I just jumped right in to help in whatever way I could. "Thankfully we didn't have any problems and I was just thrilled to be able to welcome little Carys into the world."

Mrs Shah already has 19-month-old son Dylan with her husband Keval, a banker. They had planned a home birth for their second child.

But she went into labour so quickly it was too late to call the midwife, so Mrs Shah told her husband to call her grandmother, who lives next door to them in Malmesbury, Wiltshire.

Mrs Jones rushed round and just 40 minutes later she was cradling Carys, who was born weighing 7lb 7oz.

Mrs Shah said "We're so lucky that my gran lives next door - she was totally amazing and just so calm. I don't know what we would have done without her."

Survival is The Fittest

Thousands of competitors walked on hot coals, swam through underwater tunnels and braved electric fences in what's billed as the world's ultimate endurance test.

The Tough Guy 2009 challenge is described by its organisers as a 'uniquely fear-ridden' test of both body and spirit, reports the Daily Mail.

Competitors from 25 countries descended on South Perton Farm, near Wolverhampton, for the brutal survival race.

They were strongly advised to prepare by undergoing cold water training to guard against the potentially lethal threat of hypothermia.

The freezing cold challengers began the race with a gruelling six-mile cross-country run and were then challenged by 21 different obstacles including tunnels and swamps to complete the course.

The event's website warns: "The event is uniquely fear ridden and you need to be fit in both body and spirit to survive the ordeal."

The hardy challengers risk cuts, burns, broken bones and possibly worse as they make their way across the 150-acre site.

Competitors must sign a 'Death Warrant disclaimer' before taking part in the event which claims to be the 'safest most dangerous taste of mental physical pain and endurance on earth'.

Naked Hitler Show

TV bosses in Belgium have been slammed for an advert for a travel programme featuring a semi-naked Adolf Hitler.

The show's presenter Tomas de Soete was shown dressed only in pants and a swastika armband giving a Sieg Heil salute in front of a Nazi flag.

The ad, featuring a Belgian TV host caricatured as Hitler, appeared in print, reports the Daily Mail.

The Hitler picture appeared under the headline: "Discover the real Europe. Not the cliches."

National broadcaster VTR claims they were trying to expose 'travel cliches' within the tourist industry.

VTR finally withdrew the ad after being flooded with complaints.

"It's an outrage that Nazi symbolism can be used to make jokes. They completely missed the point," said one German viewer.
