Madonna wanted to adopt a second child from the poor African nation Malawi but her hope was rejected by the African court. A court in Lilongwe said, "Madonna was unsuitable to adopt the girl because she has not lived in Malawi". So she left the country.She flew out of the country on her private Gulf Stream jet. Reporters were stopped from reaching the airport by roadblocks.
She carried with her adopted Malawian son David Banda But it does not mean she has given up becoming the legal guardian of three-year-old orphan Mercy James, her lawyer has said. David Banda was adopted by the singer in 2006 and he lived with her in London.
The worldwide groups said that Madonna wanted to use her fame and fortune to get her own way. Madonna's spokeswoman rebuffed the allegations, saying: "She is not skirting any legal issues in her application to adopt this child."
Madonna married British film director Guy Ritchie - but the couple was now divorced. She has two other children, Lourdes, 12, and Ritchie's son Rocco, eight.
