Pooping Obama is a best-seller

Tiny plastic figures of Barack Obama and Gordon Brown relieving themselves in public have become online bestsellers.

They are among a host of politicians, sports stars and celebrities to be given the dubious honour of being turned into a 'caganer'.

Catalonians traditionally celebrate Christmas by placing a caganer, which translates as pooper, in a nativity scene.

People find it fun to try to spot the tiny defecating figures which are supposed to bring prosperity and a good harvest.

Traditionally, caganers would be small bearded men in full Catalan costume but these days, it's more likely to be a celebrity. Last year, Barcelona footballer Thierry Henry was the most popular figure sold.

But this year, internet orders from the rest of the world, especially the US, have made Barack Obama the best-seller.

Others immortalised into the mini figures include Mr Brown, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and wife Carla Bruni, plus Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal.

"Bluest Monday" - Ever

Experts say Monday, January 19, 2009, will go down as the most depressing day in history.

Cold weather, fading Christmas memories and broken New Year resolutions always make this a miserable time of year.

But the effects of the economic downturn makes this year worse than ever, reports the Daily Mail.

Millions were expected to feel so glum they would decide to stay in bed and up to a quarter of workers were expected to call in sick.

Psychologist Dr Cliff Arnall has devised a mathematical formula that pinpoints today as Blue Monday.

He says there are six depressive factors - winter weather, Christmas credit card bills, abandoned New Year's resolutions, job security fears, mounting debt and the house price collapse.

Dr Arnall, 43, a former Cardiff University academic, said: "The credit crunch means today is potentially the most depressing Blue Monday we have had."

Separate research by staff absence specialist FirstCare claims 22% of workers are likely to call in sick today as seasonal illness hits a peak.

And, William Hartson, a psychologist at Cambridge University, has devised a mathematical formula which marks today as the most likely for accidents.

Boyfriend Wanted a Remoth Control Plane & Got A Wii

A couple accused of assaulting each other over an unappreciated Christmas gift have been ordered to stay away from each other.

Randi Young, 24, and Heath Blom, 26, were arrested on Christmas day. Police said the pair argued after Blom complained about getting a Wii game system from Young instead of the remote control airplane he asked for.

When Young started to leave, Blom allegedly grabbed her by the hair and she turned around and hit him.

In court Monday, Young asked that the no-contact order be lifted, saying they just had a bad Christmas. But the judge denied the request.

Adopt a Koala for Christmas

They're cute, they're cuddly and, in these times of financial woe, they make an affordable festive gift that's also good for the soul -- adopt a rescued koala.

The "Adopt a Wild Koala Program" has been in operation for 15 years and is a major source of funding for The Koala Hospital, the world's only medical facility dedicated to the care and preservation of the animals.
The annual cost of adopting a koala is A$40 (US$26) within Australia and A$50 (US$32) from overseas, which the hospital said goes toward the rescue and treatment of sick and injured koalas, the release of treated animals back into the wild, as well as the preservation and expansion of their habitat.

Adopters receive a certificate, a photograph of the animal, the story of how it ended up in the hospital as well as stickers and booklets about koalas and the hospital.

"It's an ideal gift, and particularly these days when kids have everything," Anne Walsh a volunteer at the Port Macquarie-based hospital told Reuters by telephone.

"I had a phone call from a lady in Singapore today who wanted to adopt five koalas for her relatives for Christmas. I've been delighted with the amount of people wanting to adopt."

Walsh said the rescued koalas are usually named after the area they were found in and the person who helped rescue them.

"We've got Westhaven Barry, Kempsey Carolina and Bonny Fire, she was caught up in a bushfire," she added.

Once they have recovered from their injuries or ailments, and are able to live in their natural habitat, the koalas are released back into the wild.

Koalas are native to Australia and are found in coastal regions of the east and south. Their staple diet is eucalyptus leaves.
