Fake Dalai Lama

Dalai Lama is the spiritual leader of the Tibetan Buddhism and the political leader of Tibetan people. Often referred to simply as "His Holiness" (HH), or "His Holiness The Dalai Lama". "Lama" means "teacher" is a title given to many different ranks of Tibetan Buddhist clergy.

A Twitter account supposedly written by the Dalai Lama has been suspended after being exposed as a fake.

The feed attracted nearly 20,000 followers within 48 hours of launching, reports the Daily Telegraph.

It claimed to be administered by the "The Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama", and directed inquiries to the exiled monk's official website.

Explaining the 73-year-old's decision to join the microblogging site, it said: "His Holiness thought it was prudent to make his office open and assessable to a more youthful and technologically advancing audience."

Another Tweet read: "I'm sure HH will be just as inquisitive about technology as he has been over the past 14 reincarnations."

Twitter took the rare step of suspending the account after it emerged that the person behind it had no connection to the Nobel Peace Prize winner.

"The account was suspended because it violated our Terms of Use regarding impersonation," Twitter co-founder Biz Stone said.

The feed is now live again, with a caveat that its contents are not affiliated with the real Dalai Lama.

Weird Jokes

A researcher arrives in Borneo to gather data for his thesis.

Accompanied by his trusty guide, he seeks out a very remote locale for researching the mating behaviour of the giant rat of Sumatra.

Around dusk of the first day, he's sitting by the campfire with his guide when in the distance, he hears tribal drums.

They get louder.

The guide announces, "I don't like the sound of those drums."

The dusk turns evening. The drums get louder.

The guide says, "I really don't like the sound of those drums."

Evening turns to dead of night.

The drums get louder and louder, until it is obvious that the drummers must be quite close.

The guide says again, "I really don't like the sound of those drums."

Suddenly the drums stop, and a voice from the darkness cries out, "Hey man, he's not our regular drummer!"

An anthropologist decides to investigate the natives of a far-flung tropical island.

He flew there, found a guide with a canoe to take him up the river to the remote site where he would make his collections.

About noon on the second day of travel up the river they began to hear drums.

Being a city boy by nature, the anthropologist was disturbed by this.

He asked the guide, "What are those drums?"

The guide turned to him and said "Drums OK, but VERY BAD when they stop."

Then, after some hours, the drums suddenly stopped!

This hit the anthropologist like a ton of bricks, and he yelled at the guide: "The Drums have stopped, what happens now?"

The guide crouched down, covered his head with his hands and said, "Bass Solo".

The Great Escape

Two convicts are working on a chain gang. "I heard the warden's daughter up and married a guy down on cellblock D," the first con says to the other.

"The warden's mighty upset about it too."

"Why?" asks the second prisoner. "Because she married a con?"

"No. Because they eloped."

Later the sergeant reports to the chief. "Sorry Sir, but they got away."

The chief very angry says, "I told you to cover all of the exits!"

"I did," replied the sergeant, "but they got away through the entrance."

Using Internet

The Internet is a magnanimous thing in the world. There are some etiquette one has to follow while using the phone, like when coughing, cover the microphone, etc. Well, using the Internet also has its own share of etiquettes, which go under the name “netiquette”. Let's cover some of the basics:

E-mail

Forwarded e-mail chains are one of the irritating parts of using E-mails. These E-mails contain a variety of messages. Some of them are religious, some of them hold “the love of your life”-type quizzes, etc, with the general threat of a curse: “forward this message or your life will be screwed and you'll die horribly”. Word of advice, when people say send this to all of your friends, DON'T, because it's very annoying.

Never forward a personal e-mail without consent of the original sender. Use the subject field when sending e-mails; it's there for a reason. Also remember, records of e-mails are kept in the servers, even deleted ones. Don't say things that would get you into trouble.

Chatting/forum etiquette

Chat groups and forums are a lot of fun. But the number one rule of using them is, don't give out personal info or your pictures. See the cartoon? You don't know who is on the other side.

There are a few other rules, like not using CAPITAL LETTERS because that means you are shouting. If someone makes a mistake, correct them, but don't gloat. Avoid flame wars. It's also smart not to respond to threats and leaving threads that are uncomfortable to you.

When you are chatting with someone, it is polite to say be right back [brb] before answering a phone or responding to your parents. It is similar to when you say, “hold on a sec” when talking on the phone. It is also polite to say bye before logging out on someone.

Facebook

Facebook is a kind of social network which connects all your long lost friends, helps you keep easy tabs on people. But there're also some manners and safety involved. Make sure it's only your friends who may view your information. It is better if you get to know the person in real life before you allow him access to copiable pictures that may or may not be used in Photoshop. Don't post unflattering pictures of people without their consent. Don't bug people with friend requests just because they are hot or famous.

These are some of the basic netiquettes. Check out the following sites for more info. Manners reflect your character, both in the virtual and the real world. So try to make a good impression. It'll help you meet good friends.

Calender History

Everyone knows January is the first month of the year. And in the dim recesses of our brains, we might even recall learning what was it, fourth grade?that the month is named for Janus (below), the two-headed Roman god. Janus could look backward and forward at the same time, making him the perfect figurehead for a month that ushers in a new year, marks the change from days growing shorter to days growing longer, heralds a farewell to one American president and the inauguration of another, and starts the new season of American Idol, with a supercool fourth judge added to the tiresome old mix!

Only here's what they probably didn't teach you in elementary school: January wasn't always the first month of the year. In Roman days, it used to be the 11th month. Back then, March was the first month of the year. Named for the god of war, March was the time when the Romans planted their fields and went off to battle. “War was very, very important to the Romans,” explains Judith Hallett, professor of classics at the University of Maryland. “The Romans loved war. They benefited from it.” The spoils of war included land and the ever popular plunder.

Meanwhile, January and February brought up the end of the Roman year. “They were two depressing months,” Hallett says. The only bright spots during those times were certain festivals, like Lupercalia, the February bash during which men ran around naked and whipped women to promote fertility. I'm guessing the men enjoyed that festival more than the women did.

But I digress.

So how did January go from No. 11 to No. 1? Blame it on politics!

A couple of hundred years before the reign of Augustus Caesar (31 B.C. to 14 A.D.), the Romans began thinking of a better way to wage politics. Instead of inaugurating their consuls in bellicose March, why not install them in office in January, two months before the country went off to war? To mark this political upheaval, the 11th month of the year thus became the first month.

I know what you're thinking: What an uncanny parallel to American history! Our president used to be inaugurated in March, toountil the 20th Amendment, ratified in 1933, changed the date. Franklin D. Roosevelt was the first to take office on January 20. The reason for the change? To cut back on the long period of lame duckery.

So here's a tip of two hats to Janus, god of gates and doorsand a much better symbol for new presidents than Mars.

Biggest Library In The World

British Library is of the richest and finest libraries in the world. The library is based in London. It is one of the world's richest research libraries, holding over 150 million items in all known languages and formats; books, journals, newspapers, magazines, sound and music recordings, patents, databases, maps, stamps, prints, drawings and much more. It is only second to the American Library of Congress. The British Library's collections include around 25 million books, along with substantial additional collection of books and additional collection of manuscripts and historical items dating back as far as 300 BC.

The Library was created in 1973 by the British Library Act 1972. Prior to this, the National Library was part of the British Museum, which provided the bulk of the holdings of the new library, alongside various smaller organizations which were folded in (such as the British National Bibliography and India Office Library). For many years its collections were dispersed in various buildings around central London, in places such as Bloomsbury (within British Museum), Chancery Lane, and Holborn, with the lending library at Boston Spa, West Yorkshire and the newspaper library in Colindale, north-west London. Since 1997 the most of the collections have been moved to the present new building on Euston Road next to St. Pancras Railway and Underground station. The purpose built building was designed by architect Colin St. John Wilson . Facing Euston Road is a large piazza that includes pieces of public art, such as large sculptures by Eduardoo Paolozzi and Antony Gormley. The Library has 625 km of shelves and in the middle of the building is a four-storey glass tower containing the King's library, with 65,000 printed volumes along with other pamphlets, manuscripts and maps collected by King George III between 1763 and 1820. Besides the main Library, a researcher or a reader can order materials from other locations of the Library situated in Micawber Street, Woolwich in London or from far away locations such as from Boston Spa, Collindale (for Newspapers), or from Yorkshire. Depending on what you have ordered and from which location the ordered items are delivered between seventy minutes to more than two days. British Library is not an open shelve library, excepting few dictionaries or encyclopedias.

The Library is open on all weekdays excepting Sundays and public holidays. One has to possess a reader's pass which is available free of cost and may have a validity of six months to five years. Normally undergraduate students were not issued a readers pass on the assumption that they have access to their own university library. In England if a University Library did not have a particular title in its own collection it could borrow it from other libraries, including the British Library. Now the British Library allows undergraduate students as long as they have a legitimate personal, work-related or academic research purpose.

Selections from the British Library's manuscripts collection have been made available to download from the internet and gives access to 30,000 images online. The Library's commercial secure electronic delivery service can supply more than one hundred million items for researchers and library patrons worldwide which were previously unavailable outside the Library due to copyright restrictions.

The Library has a permanent Exhibition Gallery called Sir John Ritblat Gallery where important books are on display to the general public. The Library also stages temporary free exhibitions on a wide range of subjects. When I was using the Library last October it was hosting an exhibition titled 'The Ramayana-Love and Valour in India's Great Epic.' The audio-visual gallery was hosting the anti-Vietnam War movement of the sixties in Europe and US. The Library has an excellent gift and coffee shop and the entire building is served by WiFi service. Next time you are in London just take a day off and spend it in the British Library. I can bet you will love to come back. I have regularly done that since 1987 even if I am in London for couple of days.

Presenter of BBC won't plead for calling British PM 'idiot'

BBC television presenter Jeremy Clarkson said that he was sorry for having made fun of British Prime Minister Gordon Brown's appearance but he would not apologise for calling him an "idiot".

Clarkson, known as the face of the BBC's top-rated "Top Gear" car show, had described Brown, who lost his sight in one eye in an accident suffered while playing rugby as a teenager, as a "one-eyed Scottish idiot" during a press conference in Sydney.

Clarkson was sharply criticised for the remarks by British politicians and the Royal National Institute of Blind People, and though he issued an apology on Friday, he told The Sun tabloid that he hadn't "apologised for calling him an idiot."

"I very specifically apologised for making fun of his personal appearance -- very specifically," he told the newspaper from his Sydney hotel.

"I have nothing against the Scottish and of course I regret making any remark that might have upset the disabled.

"But the idiot bit -- there is no chance I'll apologise for that."

The world's Smallest Cinema In The Garden

A 73-year-old woman and her 35-year-old man are going to open the world's smallest cinemas in their back garden. They are wife and husband.

Edna and Simon Martin launch the 17-seater picture house behind their terrace house will attract local film enthusiasts.

The couple insist that their "artistic temperaments" mean their relationship does not suffer despite their 38-year age gap.

The cinema, called the Savoy Lounge, will show silent films from the 20s and 30s to which Mr Martin will play the accompanying music on his restored Compton organ.

The couple, who married four years ago, invited a small group of friends for their first organ concert last week and hope to open the cinema within the next few months.

"It has been Simon's dream all his life to own a Compton organ," said Mrs Martin, a grandmother, from Weston-super-Mare, Somerset. "He really becomes quite a showman in front of an audience."

The couple will not be able to charge an admission fee because it is not a licensed venue. But they are hoping for donations to help pay for their overheads.

Divorced Through "Facebook"

A wife has become first woman to be "divorced" through Facebook.

Emma Brady claims she only found out her six-year marriage was over when her husband posted a message on the social networking site.

It simply said: "Neil Brady has ended his marriage to Emma Brady."

Emma, 39, only learned she was dumped when her best friend from Denmark phoned to see if she was OK, reports the Daily Mirror.

One person from Canada wrote: “You are better off out of it.”

Conference manager Emma said: “I joined Facebook because girls at work said it was fun.“The first I knew about the break-up was when I got a call from a pal.”

Mum-of-one Emma, of Blackburn, said: "We were like any other couple. We had our ups and downs but as far as I knew things were fine between us.

"When I got the phone call I was shell-shocked. My first instinct was to phone him but my friends at work insisted I should speak to him face to face. He acted like everything was fine.

"This whole thing has been terrible. It's been humiliating having everything happen so publicly."

Yet in December, IT consultant Neil assaulted her at their home in Accrington, Lancs. He was fined £580 by JPs in Blackburn.

Neil, now living in Baxenden, Lancs, said: “Her behaviour was totally unreasonable. I’d been telling her for ages I wanted a divorce.”

'Bin Laden' Applies For "Best Job In The World"

Queensland launched the "Best Job in the World" campaign on January 12, calling for video applications from people interested in a A$150 000 (R1 million) contract to relax on Hamilton Island in the Great Barrier Reef for six months while writing a blog to promote the island.

The job is part of a A$1.7 million campaign to publicise the charms of northeastern Queensland state. The employee will live free on the island, exploring the reef and posting videos and photos on a weekly blog.

A hoaxer purporting to be Osama bin Laden has applied for the "best job in the world" - as caretaker of a tropical Australian island.

More than 10,000 people have applied for the position since it was advertised by Tourism Queensland, reports the Sydney Morning Herald."I enjoy the outdoors and sandy areas," the subtitles read. "I've got experience with videos, delegating tasks and experience with large scale event coordination."

Tourism Queensland confirmed that a person using bin Laden's name had lodged an official application - but it was rejected as inappropriate.

The employee will live free on the island where light duties include exploring the reef and posting videos and photos on a weekly blog - for a £70,000 pay packet.

68 Year Old Lady Faled Driving Test For 771 Times!

An elderly South Korean woman has failed her driving test for the 771st time.

But the 68-year-old lady told the local media she has no intention of giving up.

The woman lives in the city of Jeonju. She has taken the test almost every working day since 2005.

She failed it again this week, setting a new record for the country. She is the first woman who tried for 771 times but she continued to fail.

The Korea Times said the woman, identified only by her last name Cha, plans to make another attempt.

Her problem is that she cannot pass the written section of the test. The pass mark is 60 out of 100 but she only averages 30-50.

Cha sells food and household items at apartment complexes, carrying the items in a handcart.

She says getting a driving licence would enable her to buy a car and expand the business.

Police estimate she has spent almost £2,500 taking the written tests in addition to other expenses.

Jokes Of The Day

Doctor: "Did you take the patient's temperature?"

Nurse: "No. Is it missing?"

Doctor: "Nurse, how is that little boy doing, the one who swallowed ten quarters?"

Nurse: "No change yet."

Three nurses went to heaven, and were awaiting their turn with St. Peter to plead their case to enter the pearly gates.

The first nurse said, "I worked in an emergency room.

We tried our best to help patients, even though occasionally we did lose one.

I think I deserve to go to heaven." St. Peter looks at her file and admits her to heaven.

The second nurse says, "I worked in an operating room.

It's a very high stress environment and we do our best. Sometimes the patients are too sick and we lose them, but overall we try very hard." St. Peter looks at her file and admits her to heaven.

The third nurse says, "I was a case manager for an HMO."

St. Peter looks at her file. He pulls out a calculator and starts punching away at it furiously, constantly going back to the nurse's file.

After a few minutes St. Peter looks up, smiles, and says, "Congratulations! You've been admitted to heaven ... for five days!"

Indian Girl Forced To Marry A Dog In A Bizarre Ritual

India still has a land of enduring superstition, especially in rural areas where literacy is practically non-existent. Recently a most weird news occured in Jharkhand. A young girl was forced to marry a dog in order to ward off “evil spirits.”

In India’s eastern Jharkhand, locals in the Munda Dhanda village have ‘married off’ one of its children to a stray dog because they believed her family was endangered by a malevolent spirit that could be assuaged in no other way.

The ceremony was performed to the beating of many drumsin the belief that it would help to overcome any curse that might fall upon the unfortunate family.

Interestingly, the girl will be free to marry a man later in life without even seeking a divorce from her four-legged husband!

Obama's Half Brother Arrested

U.S. President Barack Obama's half brother was arrested at his home in a slum on suspicion of drugs' possession.

"I think it was a misunderstanding. I do not do drugs," George Hussein Obama, 27, told Reuters from Nairobi's Huruma slum, where he was picked up for a few hours on Saturday.

"They released me with no charge."

Local media quoted police saying Obama, who works as a mechanic, had been found with two rolls of marijuana.

Kenya's leading newspaper, the Nation, said he would be charged in court on Monday.

But Obama said that was untrue, and police officials refused to comment.

"I don't know what you are talking about," area police chief Jasper Ombati told Reuters, before hanging up the phone.

George Obama hardly knows his brother, the first black president of the United States, who is hero-worshipped in Kenya due to his ancestral roots.

The White House declined comment.

Several of President Obama’s Kenyan relatives went to Washington, DC, for his inauguration, but George was not among them. He lives in Huruma with extended family.

Media reports about him surfaced over the summer, after a magazine article said he lived in a shack and earned a dollar a day. George Obama has called the reports insulting.

“I’m proud of how I live,” he said in an interview over the summer. “[The media] are tarnishing the family name.”

He also said he was studying to be a mechanic and works with a local youth group in Huruma.

In President Obama’s book Dreams From My Father , he describes George Obama as “a handsome, roundheaded boy with a wary gaze”.

George is the youngest of the senior Obama’s seven children, born six months before his father died.
