A 101-year-old great-grandmother voted in election  for her grandson in order to become mayor in an Italian town. Maria Donati is to stand for the local council in Saludecio, eastern Italy, after her 62-year-old grandson Roberto stood for mayor.

Grandmother said she wanted to stand as a councillor to help out her grandson: "Roberto is still so young, what does he know? He needs my help and I have 100 years of experience." 

She also said,"There are things that I have seen and been through in my life which would be a very great use to him and everyone else who runs the town. I am sure I can bring something they need. Yes, I am old but along with that I think I am wise. I think I have a very good chance in these elections."

Italian atheists have lost a bid to run "no God" advertisements on city buses after strong opposition from conservative political parties, a member of the atheists group said on Saturday.

The ads reading "The bad news is that God doesn't exist. The good news is that you don't need him" were to have been put on buses in the northern city of Genoa, home to the Catholic cardinal who is head of the Italian Bishops Conference. The mock-up was ready and the contract was sent to the group for signing but the publicity agency changed its mind and said the ad could not run it because it violated an ethics in advertising code, according to Giorgio Villella of The Italian Union of Atheists and Rationalist Agnostics (UAAR).

"Right-wing politicians criticized us ferociously," Villella said by telephone from the group's base, adding that at least one bus driver in Genoa said he would refuse to drive a "no God" bus. "It's strange that in a country where ads depicting near-naked women wearing skimpy lingerie is permitted on buses that we can't run ads about atheism," Villella said.

Villella said the group's lawyers would likely file an appeal to a court to overturn the decision and that the group would try to run the ads in other Italian cities. Atheists in Barcelona, London and Washington have already run "no God" ads on city buses.

Divorcing couples in Italy are flocking to a photographer who's offering to shoot a wedding-style album of their split.

Gianni Fasolini, from Valeggio sul Mincio, had the brainwave after reading that the divorce rate was going through the roof.

"People celebrate a marriage as a milestone in their lives, but a divorce is an important event too," he explained.

The 45-year-old added: "I have been doing photos of weddings and marriage ceremonies for years, day in and day out, and people told me they like having a photo marking important events in their lives.

"Then I got to thinking that maybe there would be some demand for people marking their divorces and so I started to offer photo sessions for freshly divorced couples - them smiling or shaking hands or in some cases even kissing.

"I advertised the offer and as soon as people found out about it they were queuing up at my shop for sessions."

Four couples in the same road ended up in custody in Italy after fighting over watching Euro 2008 on TV.

A police spokesman in Lucca said: "We kept getting calls about disturbances in the same road and at first we though they were about one single incident but the addresses were all different.

"When our officers got to the four different houses we found though it was the same argument - the men had refused to let their wives watch films when the football was on."The women had been so angry they attacked their husbands.

We had to take all of them into custody before we could resolve the matters," added the spokesman
